Foreign media: Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, stated that the country is considering halting the construction of new nickel smelters to alleviate global oversupply, protect domestic industries, and optimize industrial structure. Semi-processed nickel products—including ferro-nickel used primarily in stainless steel and nickel matte used in electric vehicle batteries—account for 50% to 60% of Indonesia’s total output.

The Center for Advanced Defense Studies estimates that Chinese investment accounts for 75% of Indonesia’s nickel refining sector, meaning Chinese firms would be most directly affected. Nukila Evanti, member of the Asia Center's Advisory Council, advised Chinese investors to reassess and selectively scale back new smelting capacity, particularly in intermediate products where market oversupply already exists.
