Xinhua News Agency, The Hindu, September 27: India's state-owned telecom operator BSNL has officially launched the "Swadeshi" (self-reliant) 4G network, marking India as the fifth country in the world to achieve indigenous telecom equipment manufacturing, following China, Denmark, Sweden, and South Korea. On September 26, Prime Minister Modi unveiled BSNL's "Swadeshi" 4G network, with the commissioning of 97,500 mobile 4G base stations, of which 92,600 were operated by BSNL. It is reported that the total cost of these mobile 4G base stations reached 37,000 crore rupees (Rs 37 billion), using solar power technology, making it the largest green telecom site cluster in India. The network data effectively covers more than 26,700 villages without internet access in border and remote areas, and is expected to serve over 2 million (20 lakh) new subscribers. According to an official statement from India, the "Swadeshi" 4G network is a transformative step towards Prime Minister Modi's "Digital India" vision, effectively bridging the digital divide, empowering rural communities, and laying the foundation for BSNL's 5G upgrade. India's Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, stated that India has achieved a glorious transformation from a "service and consumption country" to a "production, innovation, entrepreneurship, and export center."
