Foreign media: Since 2025, Canada has rejected 80% of Indian student visa applications.
New Delhi: Canada has long been considered a preferred center for international education, especially favored by Indian students. However, Canada has implemented the strictest visa system in a decade. According to the latest data, nearly 80% of Indian student visa applications were rejected in 2025.
Indian students account for 40% of Canada's international students. According to "PIE News", citing BorderPass data, four out of five Indian applicants were rejected in the second quarter of 2025.
"PIE News" reported that the high rejection rate is affecting students from Asia, Africa, and other regions, indicating that Canada is changing its approach to international education.
For decades, North America has been the default choice for many students because it offers safety, opportunities, and world-class institutions. However, recent data show a significant shift. The popularity of Canada among Indian students has dropped from 18% in 2022 to just 9% in 2024. Meanwhile, Germany has replaced Canada as the top choice, with 31% of students now choosing Germany.
The number of international students in Germany is on the rise. It is reported that due to a strong economy, state-funded public universities, and expanding English programs, Germany is becoming the preferred destination for Indian students. According to data from the German Federal Statistical Office, the number of Indian students has more than doubled over the past five years, increasing from 49,500 in 2023 to nearly 60,000 in 2025.
Indian students are now choosing countries with low tuition fees, high-quality education, and good career prospects. Traditional study destinations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada are facing increasing domestic pressure, while other options like Germany have an advantage.
