"Interest First"? Japan's METI to Visit Russia to Restart Cooperation

According to a report by Asahi Shimbun on May 10: The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will dispatch personnel to Russia by late May to coordinate support for Japanese companies returning to Russia. METI disclosed this plan in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on the 9th.

According to officials at METI, representatives from major trading companies will also accompany the delegation to Russia. Although the G7 continues to impose sanctions on Russia, it appears to be paving the way for broad economic cooperation before a ceasefire.

METI emphasized on X: "Japan intends to continue implementing sanctions against Russia in coordination with the G7, and currently cannot advance new cooperation with Russia."

On the other hand, the official stated: "Measures are necessary to protect Japanese corporate assets still located within Russia."
