On June 7, South Korean media Maeil Business Newspaper reported that the CEO of NVIDIA, the world's largest AI semiconductor company, expressed disagreement with the policies of the Donald Trump administration, stating that the US AI semiconductor export ban to China has failed.
Recently, Huang Renxun stated in an interview that "the US export ban has failed. The facts have proven this."
He said, "Due to the export restrictions, we were unable to ship the H20 products to China. As a result, we had to deal with the entire loss of billions of dollars in inventory. This is equivalent to the total sales of some semiconductor companies."
Huang Renxun stated, "When the Biden administration took office, we held 95% of the AI semiconductor market share in China, but it has now dropped to 50%. Moreover, we can only sell low-specification products, so the average selling price has also decreased, and we have lost a lot of profit."
He continued, "Currently, the H20 or Hopper architecture cannot further reduce performance; if the performance is reduced further, it will no longer be useful in the market." He indicated that it is difficult to manufacture lower-specification AI semiconductors for China.
When the US government banned the export of high-performance AI semiconductors to China, NVIDIA produced and sold H20 for China, but the Trump administration even restricted the export of H20 to China. Last year, NVIDIA's sales in China were about $17 billion.
Huang Renxun stated, "China is the world's second-largest computing market, and the overall AI market size is expected to reach approximately $50 billion next year. This is also a huge opportunity for NVIDIA, and we do not want to miss it."
At the same time, he emphasized, "We should not forget that Huawei, one of the largest and most powerful technology companies in the world, is innovating rapidly, and they do not wish us to return to China."
In fact, according to The Wall Street Journal, Huawei is in the early stages of developing its latest AI semiconductor, "Ascend 910D," which outperforms NVIDIA's flagship product, the "H100."
Huawei has also successfully developed Ascend "910B" and "910C," which are considered high-specification AI semiconductors. In the case of 910B, the product has been successfully commercialized and is on the market.
Huang Renxun said, "I hope the US government realizes that this ban is ineffective and change the policy so that we can compete again in the Chinese market."
