Bloomberg News: Kazakhstan holds new parliamentary elections, with Tokayev hinting at continued leadership

Kazakhstan held voting today for the members of its unicameral parliament. In an interview, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signaled that he may continue to lead the country beyond the end of his current term.

When asked whether he would run in the next presidential election, Tokayev told the media after casting his vote: "According to our national laws, I have the legal eligibility to run for re-election." He added: "Perhaps I will give a clearer answer next year."

A total of seven political parties are competing for 145 parliamentary seats, which will be allocated according to proportional representation based on party lists. The new parliament will serve a five-year term. According to data from Kazakhstan's Central Election Commission, voter turnout reached 53.12% by 2 p.m. on the day of the election.
