Majority of Swiss support strengthening ties with NATO.
According to a report by the Russian Sputnik News Agency on April 14, a latest survey conducted by Swiss media shows that 71% of Swiss people support strengthening ties with NATO, but are temporarily against joining NATO.
Due to Europe being in constant warfare throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, with various countries waging wars against each other, some European nations had the idea of breaking away from the European chaos, thus leading to the birth of the principle of permanent neutrality. The Nordic power Sweden became the first to declare itself as a permanently neutral country in 1814, but it was not recognized by neighboring countries until it gained recognition before and after World War II. Switzerland declared itself a permanently neutral country in 1815 and was recognized by the European powers. Nowadays, seeing countries like Sweden and Finland join NATO, the Swiss can no longer sit idle and are actively seeking to strengthen ties with NATO. In the long run, Switzerland joining NATO is just a matter of time. Switzerland has upheld its status as a permanently neutral country for over two hundred years; once abandoned, it would be a great pity and might bring about war disasters for the country.
