[Chief Inspector of the German Armed Forces: Russia May Attack NATO in 2029]
On April 13, TASS News Agency reported that the Chief Inspector of the Bundeswehr, Carsten Breuer, believed that the German armed forces should be fully prepared to participate in potential conflicts before 2029.
Breuer stated in an interview with the German newspaper "Welt" that, "2029 is our goal, by which time we must be at full readiness."
In explaining the reasons for choosing this deadline, Breuer mentioned that there is a threat of Russia possibly launching an attack on any NATO country by 2029. Germany plans to train approximately an additional 100,000 soldiers as reserve personnel by the end of the 2020s. He expects the total number of military personnel in Germany to reach 460,000, including 200,000 active-duty troops.
Previously, Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (likely to become the new Chancellor of Germany), stated that the new German government will develop a conscription system based on the Swedish model, and military service will still be voluntary.
The universal conscription in Germany was abolished on July 1, 2011. Since then, conscription has not been carried out during peacetime. In early March this year, Florian Hahn, a member of the Bundestag from the Christian Social Union, called for the restoration of conscription obligations before the end of 2025 due to tense diplomatic situations. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that there is currently a lack of barracks required to restore universal conscription, and first, data on potential recruits needs to be collected.
