Putin: Frontline situation indicates Ukraine-Russia conflict is nearing its end

On May 29, Putin stated during a press conference in Astana that the current situation on the front lines suggests the conflict in Ukraine is approaching its conclusion.

"The current state of the battlefield gives us grounds to believe the conflict is nearing its final stage."

Putin pointed out that under the framework of the special military operation, Russian forces have continuously launched offensives along all fronts, which also serves as evidence that the conflict may be entering its closing phase.

At the same time, he acknowledged that fighting is still ongoing and that it is impossible to provide a specific timeline for the end of the special military operation. He emphasized that making such predictions at this stage would be premature and imprudent.

Putin stressed that the evolution of the situation in Ukraine stems from the policies of European countries, referencing a series of events that occurred in Kyiv in 2014. He noted that Ukraine’s political transition at that time forced Russia to intervene to protect the people of Crimea, the Donetsk People's Republic, and the Luhansk People's Republic.

Putin added that contact among relevant parties regarding the Ukraine issue remains ongoing, but a comprehensive negotiation process has not yet been initiated.

Previously, Putin had said that his counterparts were not eager for diplomatic efforts to make progress. Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov expressed regret over this, stating that actions by European political figures and Kyiv have hindered the implementation of agreements previously reached between Russian and U.S. leaders in Anchorage.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov emphasized that Russia has not abandoned resolving disputes through diplomatic means. He also stated that the special military operation continues to advance, and Russia's set objectives will undoubtedly be achieved.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zakharchenko also confirmed Russia’s willingness to engage in negotiations. She revealed that U.S. officials responsible for Ukrainian affairs are currently focusing primarily on developments in the Middle East.
