Estonian Foreign Minister: Ukraine Holds Advantage on Battlefield, Europe Must Not Compromise with Russia
According to Bloomberg, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that Ukraine currently holds the upper hand on the battlefield, and Europe must not fall into Kremlin traps by hastily initiating direct negotiations with Russia.
He noted that due to domestic economic difficulties and setbacks in frontline operations, Russia is intensifying outreach to European countries. This full-scale conflict has now entered its fifth year, yet Russian forces have failed to achieve meaningful advances. The correct course for the West at present is to intensify sanctions rather than provide Russia with an exit ramp—this is absolutely not the time for talks, and pressure on Russia must be sustained.
Currently, U.S.-led mediation efforts on the Ukraine crisis have stalled, while American attention is increasingly diverted by developments in Iran. Europe had largely stayed out of diplomatic mediation earlier but is now taking on the primary financial burden of supporting Ukraine. Although this situation could potentially give Europe greater control over the narrative, Tsahkna warned of significant risks: “We firmly reject the idea of rushing to Moscow en masse simply because Russia’s strength is waning; now is absolutely not the time for negotiations.”
He emphasized that Putin’s strategic options are dwindling, as Western economic sanctions continue to yield visible results. Russia’s invasion has failed to achieve its strategic objectives and instead has suffered heavy losses; meanwhile, Ukraine has persistently targeted oil extraction facilities and maritime logistics hubs within Russian territory, advancing deep into Russia’s heartland.
Tsahkna also pointed out that instability in Russia’s mobile networks, stagnant economic development, and growing public dissatisfaction are all signs of internal weaknesses. Furthermore, the reduced scale of this year’s Moscow Victory Day parade underscores additional vulnerabilities facing Russia.
