U.S. Blocks G7 Communique Condemning Russian Missile Strike on Ukraine
The United States has informed its Group of Seven allies that it will not back a statement condemning Russia's deadliest attack on Ukraine this year as it seeks to keep negotiations with Moscow on track.
Two short-range ballistic missiles were fired at the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy on April 13, one armed with cluster munitions, by Russia. President Zelenskiy said the strike killed at least 35 people and injured 119 others, including children.
According to people familiar with diplomatic correspondence, the Trump administration told allies it could not sign a statement condemning the attack because it was "working to preserve space for negotiating peace," as talks between the White House and the Kremlin continue.
