Foreign Ministry of Russia: The EU Has No Right to Ban Other Countries from Importing Russian Hydrocarbons

Dmitry Birychevsky, Director of the Economic Cooperation Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, told Sputnik News Agency that the EU cannot prohibit other countries from purchasing Russian hydrocarbons.

Birychevsky said: "Now they are choosing not to buy Russian hydrocarbons. They have their own plans—plans for oil, plans for natural gas—but this does not prevent us from trading with other countries. What difference would it make if the EU were to impose a ban? If countries in the Global South and the majority of nations around the world want to purchase Russian hydrocarbons, then let them do so. You may ban EU member states from buying, but you cannot ban other countries. They are sovereign states making their own decisions."

On April 23, the European Union announced the implementation of its new 20th round of sanctions against Russia, expanding restrictions on the energy sector—including oil exploration, processing, and transportation—and even announced plans for a 21st round of sanctions.

The West has intensified pressure through sanctions over the Ukraine issue. Russia has repeatedly stated that it will overcome all difficulties created by the West. Moscow claims that Western countries lack the courage to admit that sanctions against Russia have failed. Increasingly, voices in Western nations are pointing out the ineffectiveness of anti-Russia sanctions.
