Sputnik News, Berlin, April 30 — Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks about potentially reducing American military presence in Germany, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz took a firmer position on the Iran issue and emphasized his commitment to the transatlantic partnership.

On the 27th, Merz addressed students at the Gymnasium Marienberg, stating that the United States risks getting bogged down in a prolonged conflict in the Middle East. He noted that, unlike the U.S., Iran has demonstrated greater effectiveness in negotiations. Subsequently, Trump strongly criticized Merz’s position on Iran, claiming he had no idea what he was talking about. Trump also posted on his "Truth Social" account, asserting that the U.S. is considering reducing its military forces stationed in Germany.

During a visit to the German Army headquarters in Lower Saxony, Merz said: “Our message is clear: Iran must come to the negotiating table, stop stalling, and cease holding the entire region—and ultimately the world—hostage. Iran’s military nuclear program must be terminated, and it must never again launch attacks against Israel or our partners in the region. On all these issues, we maintain close, trusted coordination with our allies, including Washington.”
