The EU has frozen 210 billion euros (some say 250 billion euros) of Russian foreign assets, most of which (the EU says about 183 billion euros) are held by the Euroclear Bank, headquartered in Belgium. Now, many EU leaders are calling on Belgium to seize these large sums of money, but Belgium does not want to take the responsibility itself and has proposed that the EU needs to "share the responsibility".
German member of the European Parliament Siegbert Dreze commented on this. He believes it is a typical mafia approach. Dreze supports the view of Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, that the seizure of assets without legal basis is unacceptable. Dreze said: "Seizing Russian foreign assets will permanently destroy the European financial system, and no investor will trust us. In the end, it will be ordinary Europeans who pay for these mafia-like actions. Europe must learn to live in peace, and Europe should be more like the United States, putting domestic issues first. In this sense, Europe must 'turn to the right'."
