We wanted to stay tonight," Trump said to reporters after safely exiting the White House dinner. "I fought hard to stay."
Trump said he thought the sound of a tray dropping on the floor was what alerted him when the suspect charged into the White House press dinner, adding that he and First Lady Melania Trump were "quickly taken away" with little time to think.
Trump stated that neither he nor his team had been aware of any threats prior to tonight's event.
When asked about concerns over political violence targeting him, Trump said although he was worried, he couldn't afford to be too concerned because being president is "a dangerous job."
Trump said the gunfire incident at the beginning of the White House correspondents' dinner "brought us together."
He added that the rescheduled event would be "safer."
