Trump's extreme pressure has repeatedly worked.
According to the Associated Press, President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he plans to increase additional 10% tariffs on Canadian imports because Ontario aired a television advertisement against tariffs. The ad quoted former President Ronald Reagan to criticize U.S. tariffs, which angered Trump, who stated he would end trade negotiations with Canada. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would remove the ad after the weekend; the ad was broadcast during the first game of the World Series on Friday night. "Their ad should have been taken down immediately, but they still aired it during the World Series last night, knowing it was fraudulent," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform while traveling aboard Air Force One to Malaysia. "Due to their serious distortion of facts and hostile actions, I have decided to add an additional 10% tariff on Canada on top of the existing tariffs." Both Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Malaysia. However, Trump told reporters accompanying him that he had no intention of meeting with Trudeau at the summit.
