Negotiations between the U.S. and Iran have remained deadlocked. On Sunday, May 17, President Trump warned on his Truth Social platform that if Tehran refuses to reach an agreement with Washington, "Iran will cease to exist." According to Axios, a U.S. news outlet, Trump will convene his security team to discuss military options against Iran.
On Truth Social, Trump stated, "Time is running out for Iran—they’d better act quickly, or this country will be gone."
Despite over a month of ceasefire, the conflict that erupted on February 28 remains far from a political resolution.
Iranian media reported Sunday that the United States made "no substantive concessions" in response to Iran’s proposals. According to Mehr News Agency, the U.S. simultaneously demanded "extremely strict and long-term restrictions" on Iran’s nuclear program and linked the "cessation of hostilities across all fronts" to the initiation of formal negotiations.
Nuclear issues remain the most central and intractable point of contention between the U.S. and Iran.
Fars News Agency reported that Washington has presented Tehran with a list of five demands, including allowing Iran to retain only one nuclear facility in operation and transferring its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to the United States.
The same source said the U.S. has not only refused to unfreeze 25% of Iran’s overseas frozen assets but also declined to compensate Iran for losses incurred during the war.
