Japanese media: BYD is expected to be the top global seller in 2025

Japanese media "Mainichi Shimbun" published an article on October 3rd stating that Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is expected to surpass Tesla in 2025 and become the leader in global electric vehicle sales.

BYD announced the sales of electric vehicles from January to September as approximately 1.61 million units, a year-on-year increase of 37%, while Tesla, due to boycotts, declined by 6% to about 1.22 million units. In the remaining three months, it will be difficult for Tesla to overtake BYD.

BYD's sales from October to December 2023 exceeded Tesla for the first time, becoming the top in the fourth quarter of that year. However, in 2024, BYD continued to catch up with Tesla, with annual sales of approximately 1.76 million units, while Tesla's sales were approximately 1.79 million units, slightly leading.

At the beginning of this year, due to strong opposition to CEO Elon Musk's political statements, a boycott of Tesla spread, causing its sales to fall below the previous year's level.

Tesla announced its sales performance from July to September 2025 on October 2nd, which increased by 7% year-on-year to 497,099 units. However, due to the U.S. government canceling the tax incentive for electric vehicle purchases at the end of September, subsequent sales are likely to be affected.

On the other hand, BYD is also facing fierce competition in the domestic Chinese market. New car sales in September, including plug-in hybrid vehicles, fell below the same month last year for the first time in 1 year and 7 months.
