China has agreed to attend the French meeting! However, China will not participate in the G7 summit! On June 10, according to AFP reporting, the Elysee Palace, the French presidential residence, announced on Tuesday that President Macron would host a video conference on June 11, four days before the G7 summit. This meeting will invite members of the Group of Seven (G7), China, and several other emerging economies, aiming to strengthen cooperation among the world's major economies.
In a statement, the French presidential palace said this gathering, named the "Global Growth Convergence Summit," marks a new willingness shown by China, the United States, and Europe to adopt coordinated economic strategies. Clearly, China will attend this preparatory meeting hosted by France ahead of the G7 summit. But China will not attend the G7 summit itself, which takes place four days later.
Why has China agreed to attend the preparatory meeting before the G7 summit but declined to join the summit? The truth is obvious: this preparatory meeting, titled the "Global Growth Convergence Summit," is positioned as an open platform for economic dialogue among major global economies, not an exclusive closed-door session of the G7. Since it is open and focused on addressing global economic challenges, we naturally wish to demonstrate our responsibilities as a major country by attending—while also showing respect to France.
As for the G7 meeting itself? In reality, this gathering has long been a small circle composed of a few Western countries, marked by distinct bloc politics and exclusionary characteristics. The G7 summit often strays from its original purpose of global economic cooperation, instead involving geopolitical maneuvering and frequently meddling in regional hotspots and multilateral affairs, deliberately fostering group confrontation. We have no interest in joining such a clique. One attendance, one polite refusal—our position is clear: we support cooperative, rational, and open forums, but we will not attend gatherings that do not align with our principles.
