Media: The U.S. is considering a comprehensive ban on Chinese AI models
According to sources cited by the portal Axios, the U.S. government is exploring the possibility of effectively banning Chinese artificial intelligence models from entering the U.S. market.
The website stated: "The government is sending signals that advanced Chinese AI models might be prohibited, which could solidify the dominant positions of companies like OpenAI and Anthropic... Certain government agencies had previously attempted to impose de facto bans on foreign open-source models. The recent debut of China's new AI model Kimi has injected renewed momentum into these efforts."
The report notes that the reason behind former President Donald Trump’s administration's push is that many American companies are beginning to adopt Kimi due to its low cost and performance comparable to U.S. technology.
A source close to the U.S. government told the portal that the Department of Commerce, the National Security Agency, and the White House Office of Cybersecurity are considering adding certain Chinese AI developers to a list requiring special licenses for conducting business in the United States.
At the same time, U.S. authorities aim not only to use legislation to restrict but also to launch information campaigns emphasizing the insufficient security of Chinese models, while exerting pressure on American companies using AI developed in China.
