Bloomberg: China's Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Carrier Berths at Sanctioned Russian Terminal

A liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier owned by a Chinese company has for the first time berthed at a Russian export terminal sanctioned by the United States. Bloomberg reported that this is another step taken by Moscow and Beijing to strengthen energy ties and circumvent Western restrictions.

According to vessel tracking data collected by Bloomberg, the LNG carrier "Kunpeng" has berthed at the "Portovaya" LNG plant, which is owned by Russia's Gazprom. The ownership and management of this ship were transferred earlier this year to some obscure companies in China and the Marshall Islands. "Portovaya" is a relatively small export facility that was sanctioned by the previous administration of President Joe Biden in January this year.

Bloomberg wrote that China, which does not recognize unilateral sanctions, is increasing its imports of Russian gas listed on the blacklist of Western countries through so-called "shadow fleets." The article stated that this Asian country imported its first cargo from the "Portovaya" port at the beginning of this month.

This move comes as US President Donald Trump is intensifying pressure on Russia to end the Ukraine conflict. According to Bloomberg, if Vladimir Putin refuses a peace agreement, Washington is preparing new sanctions against Moscow's energy sector, including its shadow fleet.
