The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee approves the 2026 fiscal year defense budget
The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee confirmed to Sputnik News that the draft of the 2026 fiscal year defense budget has been approved, which increases security assistance to Ukraine by 500 million dollars.
The vote was held in secret. A spokesperson for the members of the Senate Armed Services Committee said that 26 members supported it, and only 1 person opposed it. The bill will be submitted to the full Senate for deliberation. After passing, it will be sent to President Trump for signing into law.
The passed draft states: "Extend the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) until 2028 and increase the authorized funding to 500 million dollars."
The budget for security assistance to Ukraine in the 2025 fiscal year was 300 million dollars. The 2026 fiscal year bill also mandates the Pentagon to continue providing intelligence support to Ukraine.
The bill states: "Require the Secretary of Defense to continue providing intelligence support to the Ukrainian government, including the collection of intelligence, information, and imagery data."
