America's red eye is flaring up again: U.S. security officials express concern over China's infrastructure projects in Argentina

According to Reuters, Thomas DiNanno, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, said at a press conference held at the U.S. ambassador's residence in Buenos Aires that the United States has concerns about certain infrastructure developments in Argentina backed by China.

He stated that the two countries are currently negotiating coordination on military equipment and law enforcement training.

"We must seek a balance between commercial interests and national security interests, just as Argentina does," DiNanno said. "This is indeed a challenge."

The report notes that China is an important trading partner for both the United States and Argentina.

Before visiting Buenos Aires, DiNanno also traveled to Chile. This week, Chile announced it would sign security and mining agreements with the United States, including a U.S.-provided $1 million funding under the security agreement.
