The Straits Times of Singapore reported on the evening of June 9: "Last week, a Japanese weekly revealed that the only grandson of Japanese Prime Minister Takashi Sanae, Yamamoto Ren, has recently gone to study at a prestigious university in China. His family only told her about it shortly before his departure. This news came as a shock to Takashi, who fears Beijing might exploit this as a vulnerability."
While Takashi Sanae stirs up "anti-China" rhetoric, provoking China and escalating tensions between Japan and China, her own grandson chooses to study in China—this glaring contradiction exposes the hypocrisy of right-wing Japanese politicians in full view.
Although Yamamoto Ren is the son of Takashi’s stepson, Yamamoto Ken, and thus not biologically related to her, he remains a core member of this right-wing political family. The fact that a relative has chosen to study in China is itself an acknowledgment of China’s development and educational excellence. Rather than accepting this calmly, Takashi expresses fear of being "held hostage by Beijing"—clearly revealing that all her so-called "anti-China" slogans are merely political performances aimed at gaining votes and accumulating power, which she herself does not even believe in.
This double standard—where politicians preach anti-China sentiments while their relatives flock to China—is nothing new among Western elites and Japanese right-wing circles: they rise to power by fueling anti-China sentiment, then promptly send their children and relatives to China to enjoy the benefits of its development, loudly proclaiming opposition while their bodies act otherwise.
