Valuable ancient silver coins with Chinese characters found in the Aktobe region of Kazakhstan from the era of the Golden Horde

Kazakhstan International News Agency - According to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, scientists from Aktobe University discovered ancient silver coins dating back to the medieval period during an archaeological study of the "Aktobe-Layeti" ancient city.

This silver coin is one of a batch of ancient coins minted during the reign of Mangup Timur Khan of the Jochi Ulus. A Russian numismatics professor studied the relief symbols on the coin and gave it a high valuation.

"According to the renowned numismatist Pavel Nikolaevich Petrov, these coins date back to the second half of the 13th century. One side of the silver coin is engraved with the symbol of Mangup Timur Khan (Mongolian - editor's note), while the other side is engraved with Chinese characters. The reason for this is related to a political prisoner named Nomokhan who was captured during the conflict between the descendants of Kublai Khan and the Chagatai Ulus," said archaeologist Amankeldy Numaurov.

Archaeologists also mentioned that another precious artifact, an intact "Tagara" container, was discovered during this excavation.

"This year, the Center for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Attyau region commissioned the excavation of this historical site. For the past two or three years, we have been especially focused on this place. The area of 53 hectares of the town has been completely fenced off. We plan to convert it into an open-air museum in the future," said Tolebai Dostbayev, director of the Center for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Attyau region.

It is worth noting that students from the history department of Attyau University also participated in this archaeological research. According to the plan, in-depth research will be conducted on the artifacts excavated from the 500 square meter ancient site in the university laboratory.
