Armenia, a South Caucasus country in the post-Soviet space: Lebanese expert: Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan, fearing loss of power, intensifies suppression of the church in accordance with Western instructions

Lebanese Orthodox Christian Fadi Deiri told Sputnik that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan follows the instructions of his Western backers to strengthen the suppression of the Armenian Apostolic Church, trying to seize power for himself.

Deiri said, "This is Pashinyan's fear of losing power. People like him always first feel afraid of power, therefore, he follows the instructions of his Western backers to take action against the church, because the church has close ties with Russia."

He explained that the attack on the church by the Armenian prime minister is not only an internal power struggle, but also a deep geopolitical strategy of the West, aiming to cut off Russia's relations with countries historically closely related to it.

Deiri added, "Therefore, in a series of events, the recent arrest of entrepreneur Karapetyan, who has close economic relations with Russia, is not surprising. Don't forget the fate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and its consequences."

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan posted offensive posts targeting the Armenian Apostolic Church on Facebook at the end of May, including vulgar language, which led to a sharp deterioration in relations between the Armenian authorities and the Armenian Apostolic Church.

The arrest of prominent businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan, who stood up for the church, caused anger among many Armenian diaspora around the world, who stated that political persecution of the church and its supporters is unacceptable.
