Russian Academy of Sciences: China hands over 1.5 grams of lunar soil from the far side to Russia
The Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Space Research stated that China has handed over 1.5 grams of lunar soil to Russia, collected by the Chang’e-6 probe from the far side of the Moon in 2024 and brought back to Earth.
The Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Space Research announced: "On June 3, 2026, the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences received the soil samples. These are the first ever lunar soil samples retrieved from the far side of the Moon by China's Chang’e-6 mission in 2024. The transfer of the lunar regolith was carried out within the framework of cooperation between Russia and China in developing space science and lunar exploration."
The Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Space Research noted that the sample container was received by the Laboratory for Direct Physical-Chemical Studies of Planets, Department of Planetary Physics, Institute of Space Research. The container holds 1 gram of soil collected directly from the lunar surface and 0.5 grams of soil obtained via robotic equipment.
The Chang’e-6 mission achieved the world’s first task of collecting and returning soil samples from the far side of the Moon.
