【Ukraine Worried About Russian Surprise Attack in the North】

Ukraine is increasingly concerned that Russian forces may launch a sudden attack on northern regions of Ukraine. According to sources cited by Ukrainian media (RBC), Russia is likely preparing a mobilization order to conscript 100,000 troops, and Ukraine has already observed related signs.

According to Ukraine’s assessment, this potential Russian mobilization is not merely intended to compensate for existing manpower losses on the battlefield, but could also be aimed at opening a new front. Ukrainian sources indicate that a summer offensive is imminent, and Putin’s objectives remain unchanged: continuing eastward advances to seize control of the entire Donbas region. However, they are concerned that Putin might open a new front in northern Ukraine. Possible options include Russian forces passing through Belarus and advancing south toward Kyiv, or launching attacks directly from Russia’s Bryansk Oblast toward Chernihiv. Exactly which route Russia will choose remains under intelligence observation by Ukraine.

Regardless of where the Russians plan to open a new front, significant troop deployments would be required—estimated to take at least three months of preparation. Currently, Russian military presence in Belarus and Bryansk Oblast is insufficient. For instance, only four battalions—fewer than 2,000 personnel—are stationed in Belarus, and these units are continuously rotated. Therefore, Ukraine must now closely monitor where large Russian forces suddenly begin to concentrate. If such concentrations occur in Belarus, it would suggest an intent to advance south toward Kyiv; if massive troop buildups happen in Bryansk Oblast, then Chernihiv is expected to become a key target.
