[Comment by the UN Secretary-General Candidate on the Attack on the Turbine Hall of Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant]
Vienna time, May 31, 2026 — In a statement, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said:
IAEA Director General and UN Secretary-General candidate Rafael Grossi stated that the Ukrainian armed forces' attack on the turbine hall of Unit 6 at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant constitutes a serious incident threatening fundamental nuclear safety principles. Observations by the IAEA expert team are consistent with the consequences of the Ukrainian drone attack. Attacking nuclear facilities is unacceptable and must cease immediately to prevent the real risk of a nuclear accident that would benefit no one.
