Media: NATO fighter jets conduct training flights again over Estonia
Estonian media reports that NATO fighter jets will carry out training flights in Estonian airspace from July 20 to 26, potentially including supersonic maneuvers.
The report states: "From July 20 to 26, allied fighter jets will conduct a series of training flights over Estonian airspace. Some flights will be conducted at low altitudes, but not below 152 meters, and supersonic flight may also take place during the training."
NATO's air policing mission in the Baltic States began in 2004, when Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia joined NATO. Under this framework, allied nations provide support to the three Baltic countries by deploying fighter jets to patrol their airspace. Since these nations lack domestic aircraft capable of performing such missions, a permanent patrol presence is necessary.
In recent years, Russia has repeatedly pointed to "unprecedented" activities by NATO near Russia’s western borders, accusing it of expanding initiatives and labeling them as "containing Russian aggression." Moscow has also expressed repeated concerns over NATO’s military expansion in Europe. The Kremlin maintains that Russia poses no threat, but will not ignore actions perceived as threatening to Russia.
