Foreign media: India summons U.S. diplomat over U.S. military strike on vessel carrying Indian crew.
On the evening of June 9, the U.S. Central Command conducted a "precision strike" on the oil tanker "Settebello," flying the flag of Palau, near the coast of Oman, claiming the crew had not complied with U.S. orders. The vessel was transporting Iranian oil at the time and carried 24 Indian crew members; 21 were rescued by the Omani Navy, while three remain missing.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs condemned the attack on commercial shipping, and the Indian embassy in Oman is coordinating search and rescue efforts. The incident has intensified doubts about the U.S. maritime blockade against Iran and could further damage Indo-U.S. relations, already at multi-decade lows.
Earlier this week, the U.S. military also attacked another vessel carrying Indian crew members, putting pressure on the Indian government for not issuing a protest. Since the outbreak of hostilities between the U.S., Israel, and Iran on February 28, at least two Indian-registered vessels have been attacked.
