Pakistan has passed a landmark bill banning child marriage and making sex with a minor statutory rape, punishable by up to 7 years in prison and hefty fines.
The Islamic Ideology Council said the bill "is not in line with Islam" and complained it imposes "unnecessary legal barriers" on marriage.
Translation: Protecting children = too modern.
Currently, nearly one fifth of girls in Pakistan are married before the age of 18, making the country one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world.
The bill was passed after several female lawmakers who themselves got married as children spoke out saying "enough is enough."
