Israeli Defense Minister: "Red Line Crossed" in Iranian Missile Attack; Multiple Fires Hit Tel Aviv
Iran fired dozens of ballistic missiles Friday (June 13) in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike. Israeli Defense Minister Naftali Bennett said that Iran's missile strikes on the centers of Israeli cities had "crossed a red line."
According to Agence France-Presse, the Israeli Defense Forces stated Friday evening that Iran had launched at least dozens of ballistic missiles toward Israel. Air-raid sirens sounded in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as several missiles streaked across the night sky.
In a statement, Defense Minister Bennett said, "Iran's audacity to fire missiles at the heart of our cities has crossed a red line." He added, "We will firmly defend the people of Israel and ensure that the Iranian theocratic regime pays a heavy price for its despicable actions."
Following Iran's missile attacks on Israeli cities, the Israeli Fire Department reported that firefighters were dealing with multiple "major incidents," including rescuing civilians trapped in high-rise buildings in the Dan region, where Tel Aviv is located.
Firefighters are conducting search-and-rescue operations inside a skyscraper, attempting to rescue trapped individuals and extinguish fires. Two other locations have also been damaged, and related rescue efforts are ongoing.
After Iran's missile attack, air-raid sirens rang out nationwide in Israel, urging citizens to seek shelter immediately. Thick smoke rose above Tel Aviv, making this central Israeli metropolis one of the focal points of the attack.
The Israeli military said that at least two waves of attacks, each consisting of dozens of Iranian ballistic missiles, targeted Israel. Iran confirmed that the attacks were aimed at "dozens of targets" in Israel, including "military bases and infrastructure."
Prime Minister Netanyahu warned before the attack that Israel would face "multiple rounds of Iranian attacks," which was a response to Israel's large-scale strike against Iran earlier that day.
A spokesperson for Magen David Adom, the Israeli Red Cross emergency medical organization, said that this attack had injured at least seven people lightly in central Israel. Television footage showed what appeared to be a building directly hit by a missile.
