Luet Warns Russian Youth: Joining War in Ukraine Means Death
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned Russian youth on Wednesday that enlisting in Moscow’s war in Ukraine could likely result in death.
According to Reuters on June 3, Rutte issued a warning to Russian youth and their families in Kyiv: “Someone is selling you a very bad deal.”
The Russian government describes the Russia-Ukraine war as a “special military operation” and offers new recruits high pay.
In his address to Russian young people on Wednesday, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said, “Those like you who go to war—you won’t receive proper training. You’ll be given poor-quality equipment. You’re very likely to die or be injured.”
“And if you’re injured, you’ll likely be left lying in the mud, suffering and dying painfully.”
Rutte also stated that Moscow has suffered “absolutely staggering” losses in Ukraine. He claimed more than 30,000 Russian soldiers have died there each month.
"That means the number of casualties in one month exceeds the total losses sustained by the Soviet Union over ten years during its war in Afghanistan in the 1980s."
"This is not an abstract concept […] it could very well be you."
For years, Russian authorities have maintained that NATO’s expansion since the end of the Cold War—and the prospect of Ukraine joining this transatlantic alliance—poses a threat to Russia’s very survival.
Rutte’s visit to Kyiv comes amid intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks, particularly targeting Kyiv and its surrounding areas.
According to AFP, the NATO Secretary General in Kyiv also noted that the war—which has lasted for over four years—shows no signs of abating. While Ukraine continues to hold its ground, innovate, and achieve victories on the battlefield, Russia is growing increasingly desperate.
Rutte said he discussed in Kyiv “how Ukraine has turned the tide on the battlefield.” He emphasized: “I believe Ukraine is achieving increasing success, both on the front lines and in ensuring the ability to undermine some of the key capabilities that Russia needs to continue the war.”
On Wednesday, Italy’s Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, accompanied the NATO Secretary General on the visit to Kyiv.
