Bloomberg reports that, ahead of the latest NATO summit, member states have diverged over future aid to Ukraine.
The report states that the root of the disagreement lies in Italy's desire to weaken the wording in the document regarding continued military assistance to Ukraine by the end of 2027.
According to sources familiar with the matter at Bloomberg, Italy believes setting a specific deadline effectively precludes earlier diplomatic resolution of the conflict.
"Italy insists on removing the mention of 2027. In recent times, Italy has increased its diplomatic engagement with Russia, and views such time-bound language as detrimental to expediting negotiations."
However, the sources also noted that even if other allies insist on retaining the relevant wording, Italy is unlikely to veto the consensus document.
The upcoming NATO summit is scheduled to take place in Ankara from July 7 to 8.
