The U.S. envoy says visit to Ukraine and Russia not for "photo ops": only proceed if there are substantive issues
New York Times report: Kushner and Witkoff unwilling to go to Moscow for "photo opportunities"
According to sources cited by The New York Times, President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President's son-in-law Jared Kushner are willing to continue direct negotiations on resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
However, one source told the newspaper that they would only travel to Moscow and Kyiv if there were concrete issues to discuss, rather than "for photo ops."
As reported by The New York Times, these two envoys had nearly daily contact with officials from both Ukraine and Russia, including undisclosed in-person meetings. But the report notes that their focus has now been entirely shifted toward the Middle East situation. This week, they have traveled to Qatar to launch a new round of talks regarding Iran.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said in an interview with CBS News this week that he looks forward to visits from Mr. Witkoff and Mr. Kushner. Last week, Russian President Putin also expressed similar expectations, stating that he anticipates their visit will occur after the intense phase of the Iran-related conflict concludes.
