The Battle of Lyman has begun! The Russian forces have opened another front, attacking Lyman from several directions. Lyman is located to the north of Slavyansk, a key fortress in the Donbas region. To the east of Slavyansk lies Severodonetsk, where the Russian forces have approached the city from three directions. It is clear that Severodonetsk and Lyman are two campaigns that intersect at their beginning and end, geographically closely related.
East of Lyman, previously, German newspaper "Bild" journalist Julian Ropke admitted that the Russians have taken the entire Torske area and cleared out remaining Ukrainian forces. On August 9-10, the Russian forces used motorcycle units to break through the Zelyonyi River, crossing the river via a bridge into the town of Zarychnye, and reaching the center of the town.
To the southeast of Lyman, the Russians are still fiercely fighting with the Ukrainian forces for control of Serebryanka, which has part of the town still under Ukrainian control. However, a large portion of the forest to the north of the town has been captured by the Russians. The Russians are now approaching the larger town of Yambir.
To the northwest of Lyman, the Russian forces are advancing southward along the Noyev River and have approached the town of Shandrykholov. Capturing this area would directly threaten the rear of Lyman. Clearly, to approach Slavyansk, it is necessary to re-take Lyman. If the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues, the Russian forces will attempt to encircle Lyman from three sides during their summer and autumn offensives.
