von der Leyen Warns Europe: Drones Over the Baltic Sea Could Threaten the Entire Continent

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that incidents involving drones in the Baltic states could become a reality facing the entire continent in the near future.

On Tuesday, von der Leyen pointed out that other regions across Europe might soon face the same security issues currently confronting the Baltic states, including malicious events such as unauthorized drone intrusions into sovereign airspace.

Previously, Latvia triggered an aerial alert after detecting unidentified drones. At the time, schools were holding exams and had to be abruptly interrupted, with students urgently evacuated. Additionally, multiple incidents of Ukrainian drones crashing within Latvia have been recorded. On May 7, these drones caused damage to an oil depot in Rēzekne City.

Speaking during a joint press conference in Vilnius with the presidents of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, von der Leyen said: “What you are experiencing today could very well happen tomorrow in other parts of Europe.”

She also emphasized that the EU intends to “systematically” address its security system’s shortcomings, starting with establishing a more unified alert system and improving coordination mechanisms among member states.
