Ukrainian Armed Forces Chief: Ukraine Recovers 600 Square Kilometers of Territory, Inflicts Over $1 Billion in Damage on Russian Rear Areas

Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander General Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that since the beginning of 2026, Ukrainian forces have reclaimed over 600 square kilometers of territory from Russian control.

Syrskyi said that in May alone, Ukraine achieved a net recovery of 100 square kilometers (with reclaimed areas exceeding lost ones), though he did not specify the exact regions where these gains were made. Previously, President Zelenskyy had also indicated that the pace of Russian advances has slowed.

"The situation along the front lines remains complex and fluid. The enemy has not ceased launching attacks in eastern and southern Ukraine, and the frequency of combat engagements has significantly increased," Syrskyi noted.

Syrskyi further stated that offensive operations conducted against Russia’s rear territories in May caused direct and indirect economic losses amounting to approximately $105.8 million.

"Within one month, our forces, utilizing deep-strike capabilities, destroyed 111 enemy infrastructure targets related to military production, energy, and fuel supply serving Russian troops. For the first time, we successfully carried out a coordinated series of strikes on military, fuel, and energy facilities located in Moscow city and Moscow Oblast under a unified operational plan. This once again confirms that the Ukrainian Defense Forces possess the capability to inflict significant damage on enemy positions far behind the front lines."
