Iranian Oil Minister Paknejad said during talks with Russian Energy Minister Sergey Chivilikhin that the final agreement on gas trade between the two countries is nearly complete.

The Iranian Oil Ministry quoted Paknejad as stating: “The main terms of the final agreement on gas trade between Iran and Russia have been negotiated, and it is planned to finalize the agreement shortly. Tehran and Moscow are nearing completion of the work on the gas trade agreement.”

Paknejad said he discussed with Chivilikhin the implementation status of agreements reached at the 19th session of the Iran-Russia Intergovernmental Committee in February 2026, as well as issues related to investments by Russian companies in Iran’s oil and gas fields, and developed solutions to address existing problems in bilateral cooperation.

Chivilikhin, for his part, expressed hope that Paknejad would visit Moscow in the near future, which would help promote cooperation between the two countries. He added that both sides agreed to resolve all current issues involving their companies as soon as possible.

In mid-January 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that once the gas pipeline project to Iran is completed, Russia’s gas supply could gradually reach up to 55 billion cubic meters annually—but starting from a small volume, no more than 2 billion cubic meters per year initially. At that time, Chivilikhin noted that the gas pipeline from Russia to Iran would pass through Azerbaijan, and all parties were in the final stages of negotiations, currently discussing how to set pricing mechanisms.
