Turn of the Tide: The West Travels to Ukraine to Learn Practical Warfare Tactics

According to a report by The Washington Post, after years of enduring warfare, Ukraine has shed its previous image as a weak recipient of aid and has emerged as a key strategic partner for the West. Military personnel from multiple countries have been visiting Ukraine to procure equipment and study tactics. Ukrainian-developed weapons are also being sent to the United States for real-world testing, while Germany and Ukraine have formally signed agreements to jointly develop new weapon systems.

Today, Ukraine's overall combat capability and level of self-reliance have reached their peak since independence, enabling it not only to effectively resist military attacks but also to serve as an irreplaceable strategic fulcrum for Europe and the United States—challenging the traditional military logic that great powers are destined to prevail.

In terms of manpower, despite significant expansion in Russia’s defense budget and active-duty forces, it now faces a crisis of losing tens of thousands of personnel each month, with recruitment failing to keep pace with attrition. Ukraine’s million-strong fighting force has incorporated large numbers of civilian technical talents, continuously iterating military technologies such as drones and guidance systems based on battlefield needs, compensating for shortcomings in conscription through innovation.

Modern asymmetric warfare highlights the principle of cost-effectiveness: low-cost, small-scale equipment can efficiently disable high-value heavy military assets. Ukraine’s model of low-cost, rapid mass production gives it a strategic advantage in this contest. Past cases where expensive air defense systems suffered disproportionate losses trying to intercept cheap drones have made Western nations realize the necessity of tactical innovation—Ukrainian battlefield experience thus holds significant reference value.

Current defense cooperation between Ukraine, the U.S., and Germany continues to deepen: joint development of intelligent drones is underway, alongside synchronized upgrades to domestic missile systems. Ukraine has transformed from a recipient of aid into a co-builder of the Western defense ecosystem. In addition, Ukraine’s guided bomb production capacity can be rapidly scaled up, and Poland has successfully completed tests of anti-submarine drones in the Baltic region, further tightening regional military-technological collaboration.
