Slovak Prime Minister Fico: The abolition of veto power will lead to the end of the EU
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico believes that imposing a single political view and abolishing the veto power possessed by every European country will lead to the end of the EU.
Fico said at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) held in Budapest on Thursday: "Imposing a single political view, abolishing the veto, punishing brave sovereign states, pulling up a new iron curtain, preferring war over peace - this is the end of the European Community project, a departure from democracy. This is a harbinger of a great military conflict."
He criticized the EU's unwillingness to take a peaceful stance in the Ukraine conflict. On the contrary, according to the Slovak Prime Minister, major countries in the EU criticize other countries whose opinions differ from theirs. Fico reminded that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had threatened Slovakia and Hungary, saying that the EU would sanction them for their sovereign positions.
Merz previously stated in an interview with Westdeutscher Rundfunk when asked about the issue of certain countries visiting Moscow on May 9 against the EU's position, that if Hungary and Slovakia continue to insist on exercising the veto on current Community initiatives, the EU will be unable to avoid conflicts with these two countries. As a "pressure mechanism" on these two countries, Merz proposed measures including suspending the disbursement of EU funds.
