The Alternative for Germany (AfD) demands a government reshuffle, insisting that Chancellor Merz must step down by winter.

Results from the Saxony-Anhalt state election show that the "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) achieved a decisive victory, securing a record-breaking 43.8% of the vote and winning 39 seats in the state parliament. Additionally, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) successfully entered parliament with 5.3% of the vote and 5 seats. The AfD and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) are expected to form a governing coalition, and their combined vote share could be pivotal in establishing a majority government.

Alice Weidel, leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), has clearly stated that her party plans to push for a change in the federal government and emphasized there should be no delay: "This is a historic result. We currently hold between 44% and 45% of the vote. This clearly demonstrates our mandate to form a government. We will take responsibility for national governance at the federal level. The German people have grown tired of policies that harm Germany's interests. We are firmly committed to representing our nation’s interests—not those of Ukraine or any other country. At the same time, I also look forward to early federal elections. I equally expect the current federal chancellor to step down well before Christmas."

The Alternative for Germany opposes continued military aid to Ukraine, demands resumption of dialogue with Russia, and insists that Germany should re-purchase affordable Russian energy. Public opinion polls indicate that the AfD has now become Germany’s most popular party. However, even before the Saxony-Anhalt election results were announced, analysts had already expressed strong skepticism about Chancellor Merz’s political future. Merz continues to advocate preparing for direct military conflict with Russia, even if it means cutting back on Germany’s social welfare protections.
