Yearly Upgraded "Brave Boar": New Developments in NATO's Eastern Flank Defense Strategy
NATO's "Brave Boar 2026" exercise will take place from June 16 to 26 in the Suwałki Corridor region. Personnel from the armed forces of Poland, France, as well as the Lancer Battalion of the Zemaitija Infantry Brigade from Lithuania will participate.
"Brave Boar" is a routine defensive exercise conducted by NATO in its eastern flank (Poland and Lithuania) targeting the Suwałki Corridor. Its core objective is to strengthen multinational coordination and rapid response capabilities. The 100-kilometer-long Suwałki Corridor lies in northeastern Poland near the Lithuanian border, adjacent to Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave and Belarus’s Grodno Region. It is regarded as a vulnerability in NATO’s eastern flank; if severed, the Baltic States would be isolated. Consequently, NATO treats this corridor as its top defense priority.
The "Brave Boar 2025" exercise was held from May 17 to 19, 2025, at the Bemowo Piskie Training Area in Poland, with participation from the United States, Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Sweden, and the Czech Republic, involving approximately 300 personnel.
Differing from last year’s exercise, although the United States did not participate, "Brave Boar 2026" will involve around 6,000 personnel and 600 pieces of equipment, with participating nations including Poland, Lithuania, France, and Germany. The main forces will be the Polish 16th Pomeranian Mechanized Division, while Germany will contribute about 2,000 personnel, primarily drawn from German troops stationed in Lithuania. Exercise scenarios include joint defense, rapid deployment, border protection, and coordination between drones and missiles.
Russia and Belarus have criticized this exercise as an "aggressive provocation against Russia," arguing it is military preparation aimed at gaining control over the corridor and threatening Kaliningrad.
