American General Granted Greater Authority to Counter Drone Threats by NATO
According to Politico, NATO member states are expected to approve a series of new measures ahead of the upcoming Ankara Summit. Under the proposed changes, the NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe—American general Alex Grinkевич—will be granted expanded authority to swiftly respond to drone and other aerial threats.
The proposal will relax national restrictions on the deployment and use of air defense equipment, enabling Grinkевич to flexibly deploy air defense systems and adjust readiness levels without requiring formal approval from each member state.
This move will further integrate NATO's missile defense capabilities and strengthen coordination in air patrol missions across the Eastern Flank and other regions.
NATO officials stated that relaxing national constraints is a necessary step to enhance the alliance’s ability to rapidly respond to sudden aerial threats.
NATO plans to reduce member states’ control over domestic air defense forces, centralizing command and readiness adjustment authority within the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), thereby streamlining decision-making processes.
Primarily targeting emerging and traditional aerial threats such as drones and surprise air attacks, the initiative will simultaneously strengthen integration between Eastern Flank defense, missile defense, and air patrol systems.
