Reference News Network reported on April 3 that according to a report by TASS on April 2, NATO Secretary General Rett said that he would not interfere with the United States' attempt to acquire Greenland because he believed that it was more important to discuss the security issues of the entire Arctic region.

In response to the question of why he kept out of this issue, Rett said: "Because I hope that we focus our attention on the pressing problems that need to be solved now, namely, protecting the security of the Arctic. This is a broader issue than Greenland."

He reminded everyone that Greenland is part of Denmark, and Denmark is just one of the Arctic countries, while the region also includes the United States, Canada, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. However, the NATO Secretary General did not mention that Russia and Finland, which joined NATO in 2023, are also among the Arctic nations.

Rett said: "We must address major issues." He indicated that these issues involve activities of countries like Russia in the Arctic.

Before 1953, Greenland was a Danish colony. It is still part of Denmark now, but it gained significant autonomy in 2009 and can make independent choices on domestic affairs and other matters.

A report from TASS on April 2 also stated that NATO Secretary General Rett did not comment on the "trade war" between the United States and the European Union. He expressed that NATO should protect its members from external threats such as Russia.

When asked by reporters if the "trade war" could weaken NATO, Rett said: "NATO's task is to protect all members from external threats, such as those from Russia. Any matter involving trade measures is not NATO's mission, so I will not comment on it." (Translated by Liran)
