Han media: Huawei's foldable phone tops the global market, Samsung's share plummets!
On October 13, South Korean media "Finance News" published an article stating that Huawei, relying on its dominant position in the domestic Chinese market, has more than doubled its share in the global foldable phone market. At the same time, Samsung Electronics seems to be focusing on the U.S. and European markets to improve profitability.
According to data from market research company Canalys, in the first half of this year, Huawei ranked first in the global foldable phone market with a 48% market share, more than doubling from 24% in 2024. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics' market share dropped from 45% to 20%, falling to second place.
The gap in market share between Huawei and Samsung reached 28 percentage points. According to analysis, Huawei significantly increased its market share due to the popularity of its globally first dual-fold and triple-fold phones, the Mate XT, the book-style foldable phone, the Mate X6, and the flip-style Pura X, in the Chinese market. In fact, the shipment volume of foldable smartphones in China increased by 32.8% this year. Considering that the shipment growth rate in the U.S. was only 7%, it can be said that the high growth trend continues.
However, in the world's largest premium smartphone market, the United States, Samsung Electronics still maintains the leading position. The "Galaxy Z Fold 7", launched in July, set a new record for pre-sales in the Z Fold series. In the second quarter of this year, Samsung Electronics' share in the U.S. smartphone market (31%) increased by 8 percentage points compared to the same period last year. Analysts believe this is largely due to the launch of the new foldable phone.
Analysts believe that Apple's entry into the market next year and the growing competition from Chinese companies could actually present an opportunity for Samsung Electronics. The market share of foldable phones is limited, accounting for only 1.0% to 1.5% of global smartphone sales, so expanding the market is considered Samsung's top priority. With the popularization of foldable phones and the increasing choices for consumers, sales are expected to naturally increase. Canalys predicts that the global foldable phone market will see significant growth starting next year, with an expected year-on-year increase of 51%.
