Russian Tourist Loss Severely Hurts Czech Republic: Nearly 18,000 Businesses Closed
According to a report by RIA Novosti, due to the significant decline in Russian tourists, nearly 18,000 companies in the Karlovy Vary region of the Czech Republic have shut down over the past six years. Since 2020, the number of Russian visitors traveling to the Czech spa destinations has plummeted by 93%, forcing many sanatoriums to close or restructure.
Data shows that in 2019, the region welcomed 83,000 Russian tourists, but by 2025, this number had dropped to just 6,300—its lowest level in three years. The wave of business closures peaked in 2023, when 8,800 companies ceased operations.
Additionally, the Czech visa center in Russia has ceased operations as of September 30, 2025.
