The UK Foreign Secretary Joins the "Coup" Movement — Starmer Expected to Announce Resignation on Monday
According to a Sunday report by Sky News, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has informed Prime Minister Keir Starmer that he must step down. It is reported that Cooper — one of Starmer’s most senior cabinet ministers — privately conveyed this message to the Prime Minister over the weekend.
Reports indicate that Starmer is currently not at Downing Street but instead staying with his wife and children at the Prime Minister’s country residence, Chequers. Shortly before, Peter Kyle, the UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, told Sky News that he had not spoken to Starmer since last Friday — although he did mention that they had previously held an “honest conversation” about the challenges facing the Prime Minister.
The Guardian reported that Starmer is expected to announce his resignation as Prime Minister on Monday, following intense pressure from Labour MPs urging him to step aside in favor of Andy Burnham, former Mayor of Greater Manchester, who would succeed him as leader of the Labour Party.
For several weeks, Starmer and his allies have insisted that they would resist any leadership challenge from Burnham or anyone else until after the parliamentary by-election in the Markfield constituency, where Burnham aims to return to Parliament through this by-election.
