French media focus: Success of COMAC C919, similarity with Airbus A320 emerges
French media: China's Commercial Aircraft Corporation's flagship model, the C919, is achieving brilliant success.
According to a recent report on the website of French economic monthly "Capital", with over 300 orders, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) has ushered in a brilliant beginning. Despite the fact that its flagship model, the C919, has gained recognition in China, its similarity to Airbus A320 is surprising.
The report wrote that in China, COMAC's development momentum is strong. Since 2023, the number of commercial flights of the C919 has been continuously increasing. Although this model may still be unfamiliar to many people, it is indeed COMAC's flagship product. The company does not hide its ambition: to compete with Boeing and Airbus. To date, COMAC has received more than 300 orders. According to France 2 reports, in China, at Shanghai Airport's runway, there is almost no criticism of this aircraft. An engineer from China Eastern Airlines said, "We have never found any problems in all our inspections."
Passengers on board the plane speak highly of this aircraft, which is considered as the "national pride". "I am proud that our country can manufacture airplanes," said a female passenger happily, while another passenger explained that he "chose this flight specifically because the airplane is C919". Even the pilots speak highly of it: "For 20 years, I have driven Airbus A320, A330, and A350. There are no major differences in driving," Yu Kai, a pilot of China Eastern Airlines, said in an interview with France 2.
Was the A320 disassembled and replicated?
A320? The familiar aircraft for the Chinese? It was reported that coincidentally, among the A320 aircraft sold by Airbus to Beijing, one mysteriously disappeared in the early 21st century and has never flown. Our同行 reminded us. Did China replicate it? Anyway, the similarities from the fuselage to the onboard technology are astonishing. These claims were confirmed by former Airbus executive Patrick Devaux, who recalled, "A320 turned into a ghost plane overnight."
At that time, Patrick Devaux and his colleagues all thought, "They are disassembling it... They precisely replicated every component of this aircraft." For months, rumors have been circulating that this Airbus aircraft was completely disassembled... However, the European aircraft manufacturer has never publicly accused, especially since Airbus has sold dozens of aircraft in China and opened a large A320 assembly plant in China.
European flight permit has not been obtained yet
The "Capital" website article couldn't help but ask whether European technology had fallen into Chinese hands? Since then, the C919 continues to gain popularity. After delivering the first aircraft in 2023, 13 were delivered in 2024, and COMAC plans to deliver 150 by 2028. But there is still an obstacle to overcome: obtaining permission to fly in Europe. The European Aviation Safety Agency announced that this would take 3 to 6 years. But COMAC will eventually obtain this permit, which worries Brussels, who has already compared this competition with Chinese electric vehicles.
